Title: Basketball Pdf A Love Story
“A must-read for hoops fans.... powerful and heartbreaking." - Slate“Basketball is developing its own reputation for outstanding writing—as this sterling "love story" about the game from MacMullan and Bartholomew attests.” - Booklist (starred review)"With unprecedented access to an unbelievably robust lineup of players, coaches, executives, journalists and others associated with the game, the authors bring readers into the action both on and off the court, rendering the entire history of the game in easy-to-read bites interspersed with helpful contextual stories and background information...this is must-read catnip for hoop heads." - Kirkus (starred review)"This is a shadow history of how basketball became the game that it is today -- it's all the details you don't know about the all the stuff you always thought you understood. Maybe you think you know everything about Wilt's 100-point game. You don't. Maybe you think you have a grasp on the ABA and the ACC and the complexity of institutional racism and Michael Jordan's secret grudge with George Gervin. You do not. This is not a book for people who just think basketball is OK. This is a book for people who care." -- Chuck Klosterman, New York Times Bestselling author of I Wear the Black Hat and But What if We're Wrong?“The boldface names (Russell, Wilt, West, Jordan, Bird, Magic) and the boldface events (Celtics dynasty, Showtime, Magic's HIV) are all here. But what I appreciate most about A Love Story were the reminiscences about the women's game and especially the accounts of the racial battles fought by the game's pioneers. Jackie and Rafe have done a masterful job of historical hoops excavation.” --Jack McCallum, New York Times bestselling author of Dream Team and Seven Seconds or Less “What MacMullan and Bartholomew have done here is nothing short of crafting the definitive history of the sport -- told through the people who lived it. There has never been a deeper and more star-studded cast of interviewees about basketball, and the authors pull unique insights out of them. A wonderful read.” – Zach Lowe, ESPN senior writer and host of the Lowe Post “The sweet symphony of the game is audible in every page throughout Basketball: A Love Story. You can hear the sneakers squeaking and basketballs bouncing off floors and kissing nets. Through the voices of the game’s greatest evolvers, participants and influencers, Jackie MacMullan and Rafe Bartholomew relay the rich tapestry of how basketball has genuinely touched all corners of the globe and all races and creeds.” – Jonathan Abrams, New York Times bestselling author of All The Pieces Matter and Boys Among Men "The layers and the details and vivid storytelling in Basketball: A Love Story makes this a 'must read.' I couldn't put this book down!" – Doris Burke, winner of the Curt Gowdy Media Award and member of the Basketball Hall of Fame JACKIE MACMULLAN is a television analyst for ESPN and a senior writer for ESPN.com. Inspired by a major ESPN film series, this is an extraordinary oral history of basketball—its eye-opening untold history, its profound deeper meaning, its transformative influence on the world—as told through an unprecedented series of candid conversations with the game’s ultimate icons.
This is the greatest love story never told. It has passion and heartbreak, triumph and betrayal. It is deeply intimate yet crosses oceans, upends lives and changes nations. This is the true story of basketball.
It is the story of a Canadian invention that took over America, and the world. Of a supposed “white man’s sport” that became a way for people of color, women, and immigrants to claim a new place in society. Of a game that demands everything of those who love it, yet gives so much back in return.
To tell this story, acclaimed journalists Jackie MacMullan, Rafe Bartholomew and Dan Klores embarked on a groundbreaking mission to interview a staggering lineup of basketball trailblazers. For the first time hundreds of legends, from Kobe, Lebron and Steph Curry to Magic Johnson, Dr. J and Jerry West, spoke movingly about their greatest passion. Iconic coaches like Phil Jackson and Coach K opened up like never before. Those who shattered glass ceilings, from Bill Russell and Yao Ming to Cheryl Miller and Lisa Leslie, explained what it really took to lay claim to their place in the game.
At once a definitive oral history and something far more revelatory and life affirming, Basketball: A Love Story is the defining untold oral history of how basketball came to be, and what it means to those who love it.
Sure Shot This book is great; I could have read more and more. Enjoy college basketball? There are chapters on that. The early NBA? Ditto. The ABA? Great oral history. Current NBA? A slam dunk. Women's basketball? Chapters on the WNBA, women's basketball pioneers as well as Pat and Geno. Jackie, Rafe and Dan have something for everyone, and is a great companion piece for the ESPN documentary.Great book, 10/10 if not for so much of the tool Bill Simmons I have never been a fan of longform "oral histories" online. It's a format where they gather the opinions of a varied field of experts on a topic, and quote them and order it to sound like a conversation among old heads. I always knew it had its value... but it never appealed to me.This is an oral history of the NBA.And it's great.I am not sure there was a single chapter I didn't love.Additionally, I've read a number of books on basketball and basketball's history, and I still somehow learned quite a bit. This is a must read for any basketball fan. And a great gift, especially with the holidays approaching.9.5/10 (0.5 removed because there is WAY too much Bill Simmons in this book -- he's a tool)I LOVE THIS BOOK Excellent book.......great insight and brought me back in some cases when I had viewed that event in real time
