The Gene Download

ISBN: B01D3BXLP8
Title: The Gene Pdf An Intimate History

From the Pulitzer Prize-winning, best-selling author of The Emperor of All Maladies, a magnificent history of the gene and a response to the defining question of the future: What becomes of being human when we learn to "read" and "write" our own genetic information?

2017 Audie Award Finalist for Non-Fiction

The extraordinary Siddhartha Mukherjee has written a biography of the gene as deft, brilliant, and illuminating as his extraordinarily successful biography of cancer. Weaving science, social history, and personal narrative to tell us the story of one of the most important conceptual breakthroughs of modern times, Mukherjee animates the quest to understand human heredity and its surprising influence on our lives, personalities, identities, fates, and choices.

Throughout the narrative, the story of Mukherjee's own family - with its tragic and bewildering history of mental illness - cuts like a bright red line, reminding us of the many questions that hang over our ability to translate the science of genetics from the laboratory to the real world. In superb prose and with an instinct for the dramatic scene, he describes the centuries of research and experimentation - from Aristotle and Pythagoras to Mendel and Darwin, from Boveri and Thomas Morgan to Crick, Watson, and Rosa Franklin, all the way through the revolutionary 21st-century innovators who mapped the human genome.

As The New Yorker said of The Emperor of All Maladies, "It's hard to think of many books for a general audience that have rendered any area of modern science and technology with such intelligence, accessibility, and compassion.... An extraordinary achievement."

A riveting, revelatory, and magisterial history of a scientific idea coming to life and an essential preparation for the moral complexity introduced by our ability to create or "write" the human genome, The Gene is a must-listen for everyone concerned about the definition and future of humanity. This is the most crucial science of our time, intimately explained by a master.

A great history with a flaws If you are thinking of buying this book, please note the word "History" in the title. If you are looking for a history book on genetics, heritability and the human understanding of these things, this is a great book. If you are interested in deep technical descriptions or in understanding the latest in gene editing technology, this is not the right book. The great aspect of the book is that it weaves together and conceptualizes all the bits of genetics we remember from high school biology and various articles and books we have read over the decades. The author is very good at this. The book can give you an excellent basic understanding of the topic. The downsides: 1. The author attempts to weave personal family stories into the book and relate them to genetics. The stories are not interesting and are not tied into the narrative well. Fortunately, it is very easy to skip these sections. You lose nothing in your understanding if you just skip them. 2. Every time a sensitive topic comes up like eugenics, the author puts in a great deal of effort in virtue signaling about being on the right side of the topic. The endless condemning of Nazis is not really necessary. We kind of assume the author is not an admirer of Nazis. The author goes into a long straw man argument attempting to debunk "The Bell Curve" and then restates the primary thesis of the book as established fact. It looked like he had never read the book, but needed to condemn it so he could stay in academic good graces. 3. The later parts of the book fall short as the author gets into very recent technology. The early historical narratives are excellent. The later chapters lack quality and clarity. All in all, a very worthwhile book and I have not seen anything that would provide a better history. Read the book, just be aware that there are flaws.

Her name was Henrietta Lacks, but scientists know her as HeLa. She was a poor black tobacco farmer whose cells—taken without her knowledge in 1951—became one of the most important tools in medicine, vital for developing the polio vaccine, cloning, gene mapping, and more. Henrietta's cells have been bought and sold by the billions, yet she remains virtually unknown, and her family can't afford health insurance. This phenomenal New York Times bestseller tells a riveting story of the collision between ethics, race, and medicine; of scientific discovery and faith healing; and of a daughter consumed with questions about the mother she never knew.

A must read What a great book. My previous boss gave me a copy to read and I then bought a copy off of Amazon. I'm sending it to my cousin. Its a must read for anyone, regardless of race or ethnicity.Educational, entertaining, and an overall great read I ordered this book to read for one of my Ethics classes. I was worried about so much assigned reading to complete in one week, but it turned out to be a book that you just can't put down.It still amazes me that this is a woman's real life story, the story of her family, and how they have impacted science and anyone who works or benefits from the use of cellular research. That means just about every single person is connected to Henrietta in one way or another. This was a great book that I'm so glad I read. I learned a lot and it kept me entertained and fascinated for days. It will really change your perspective and make you appreciate this woman's contribution to our scientific and health fields.

Permanent Record Pdf

ISBN: 1250237238
Title: Permanent Record Pdf
Author: Edward Snowden
Published Date: 2019-09-17
Page: 352

“A riveting account... Reads like a literary thriller... Snowden pushes the reader to reflect more seriously on what every American should be asking already. What does it mean to have the data of our lives collected and stored on file, ready to be accessed―not just now, by whatever administration happens to be in office at the moment, but potentially forever?... When it comes to privacy and speech and the Constitution, his story clarifies the stakes.”―The New York Times“Gripping... Snowden demonstrates a knack for explaining in lucid and compelling language the inner workings of [CIA and NSA] systems and the menace he came to believe they posed.”―The Washington Post“Snowden eventually decided his loyalties lay not with the agencies he was working for, but the public they were set up to protect. He felt ordinary citizens were being betrayed, and he had a duty to explain how.... His account of the experiences that led him to take momentous decisions, along with the details he gives of his family background, serve as a robust defense against accusations that he is a traitor."―The Guardian“Even for those of us who’ve followed the Snowden revelations closely, Permanent Record is full of surprises.... A deeply reluctant whistleblower, Snowden also emerges as a peculiarly American patriot, with roots that go back to Plymouth Rock.... As his memoir makes clear, all the techniques he exposed in 2013 remain in place. For that renewed warning―and for finally speaking for himself―he deserves our thanks.”―The Nation“Well-written... Snowden’s descriptions of the real impact of the various surveillance systems he disclosed―stripped of abstract concepts and technical jargon―are some of the most disturbing parts of the book.... Offers a useful reminder of the god-like omniscience that digital data can bestow on those with the power to collect it all.”―The Economist“Snowden’s book is straightforward, admirably so.... Having gazed through the windows of the panopticon, he experienced that rarity, a moment of vision: The world must be told these things I know. Against absurd odds, he delivered his knowledge to us. Now he proposes to explain to you, by first explaining to himself, how he became (both how he was formed, and why he chose to become) the person playing this watershed walk-on part on the recent historical stage.... The intimate drama of his discoveries and self-discoveries, of the inception of his appetite for virtuality and for systems, of the rise of his patriotism in both its early-naive and late-embittered phases, of his minor adventures as an ordinary operative with an extraordinary mind, and, above all, the helpless formation of his ethical crisis – these make terrific reading.”―Jonathan Lethem, The New York Review of Books“An extraordinary book... A riveting blend of spycraft as Snowden painstakingly figures out how to confirm his suspicions without tipping off his bosses, and a brilliant ethical treatise as Snowden reveals the reasoning that took him from each step to the next... The best proof yet that Snowden is exactly what he appears to be: a gung-ho guy from a military family who believes deeply in service and the values embodied by the US constitution, who explored multiple avenues of squaring his oath to uphold those values with the corrupt and illegal practices he saw around him, and worked out a breathtakingly bold and ambitious plan to do what no one else had ever managed: to expose wrongdoing in a way that provoked sustained interest and sparked action.”―Cory Doctorow, BoingBoingEdward Snowden was born in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, and grew up in the shadow of Fort Meade. A systems engineer by training, he served as an officer of the Central Intelligence Agency, and worked as a contractor for the National Security Agency. He has received numerous awards for his public service, including the Right Livelihood Award, the German Whistleblower Prize, the Ridenhour Prize for Truth-Telling, and the Carl von Ossietzky Medal from the International League of Human Rights. Currently, he serves as president of the board of directors of the Freedom of the Press Foundation.

Edward Snowden, the man who risked everything to expose the US government’s system of mass surveillance, reveals for the first time the story of his life, including how he helped to build that system and what motivated him to try to bring it down.

In 2013, twenty-nine-year-old Edward Snowden shocked the world when he broke with the American intelligence establishment and revealed that the United States government was secretly pursuing the means to collect every single phone call, text message, and email. The result would be an unprecedented system of mass surveillance with the ability to pry into the private lives of every person on earth. Six years later, Snowden reveals for the very first time how he helped to build this system and why he was moved to expose it.

Spanning the bucolic Beltway suburbs of his childhood and the clandestine CIA and NSA postings of his adulthood, Permanent Record is the extraordinary account of a bright young man who grew up online―a man who became a spy, a whistleblower, and, in exile, the Internet’s conscience. Written with wit, grace, passion, and an unflinching candor, Permanent Record is a crucial memoir of our digital age and destined to be a classic.

Amazing, this is a MUST BUY BOOK! Edward Snowden is a hero, it's never been right that big brother in the White House is performing mass surveillance activities and such, it brings into question the integrity of the top officials in the white house. Why didnt they tell us these surveillance programs were so extensive? What else aren't they telling us? What are they hiding? We deserve the right to know and its just a matter of time before people really start taking a stand for their privacy. The government is corrupt and we need a new system because apparently this one doesn't work.“And the geek shall inherit the Earth” “And the geek shall inherit the earth...” Nicely done autobiographical work from one of the most important historical figures of the 21st century. No matter what your opinion may be of him, it’s a necessary and compelling read.Good on the technical, poor on the prose Firstly, I'm an admirer of Snowden and think what he did was a great service to the whole world. His book, not so much. Snowden is not a professional writer and it shows. Snowden is at his best when writing technical journals and less so when writing prose. I thought that his attempts at humor mostly fell flat. The first 82 pages recounted his unremarkable childhood which was little different than yours or mine which to me anyway was a bit boring, just like ours. A good editor could have shrunk this to less than 25 pages. Chapter #9, "X-Ray", was about his time in boot camp which anyone who has ever gone through boot camp would recognize and it was well-done. The book started to come alive in Part Two and had me hooked by chapter #13, "Indoc".. By the time Snowden got to the actual workings of the NSA, CIA, and all of their subcontractors and how the system works I couldn't put the book down. My copy came on Weds and I read through the night and finished it today (Thurs) Had I just the first 80 pages I would have rated the book 2 stars or the final 250 pages, 4 stars.. I think 3.5 would be fair but Amazon doesn't allow us to split stars.. I think Snowden's editor failed him..I

Title: Edible Wild Plants Pdf A North American Field Guide to Over 200 Natural Foods
Author: Thomas S. Elias
Published Date: 2009
Page: 286
“Beautiful color photographs . . . temptingly arranged.”—The Library Letter

Planning an outdoor adventure? Make sure to consult this information-packed and photo-filled North American field guide—arranged by season and region—before you go!

Already a huge success in previous editions, this must-have field guide now features a fresh new cover, as well as nearly 400 color photos and detailed information on more than 200 species of edible plants all across North America.

With all the plants conveniently organized by season, enthusiasts will find it very simple to locate and identify their desired ingredients. Each entry includes images, plus facts on the plant’s habitat, physical properties, harvesting, preparation, and poisonous look-alikes. The introduction contains tempting recipes and there’s a quick-reference seasonal key for each plant.

Good book for foraging for wild greens Love the colorful pictures. Other books for years had drawings but this book has colorful pictures to identify the plant. So much better. My grandmother and I used to go 'greening' each Spring and she knew everything about edible plants. Haven't looked myself for years because not sure what was what due to faulty memory and line drawings in books. This renews my interest in foraging for greens once again as can really see what the plant looks like.Stop the bashing Lets start with some common sense and realize everyone should have more than one book so they can have better reference. I have looked through and read and own a number of edible plant books and this one is not that bad. It comes with decent pictures and a lot of local plants of the Northeastern that are very common and pretty easy to identify. This book homes with a section on poison plants as well granted it don't show them all but again you should have a second reference book to make sure you know which poisonous plants are out there / The look-a-likes. I received this book today and have read through the whole thing already. I believe it's a pretty good book definitely better than a lot of other ones I've read.Great resource-I always take it when I go foraging. This is one of my favorite, best, most-used books for foraging. I take it everywhere when I go out in the woods. I'll wear this book out from over-use and then I'll get another one to wear out. To improve my plant ID, I press a sample from each plant I find and ID on the relevant page. This is a good all-around book to have on your wild edibles shelf.

"Ian Schrager, the former co-owner of Studio 54, collects photographs and stories from the nightclub's heyday in the late 1970s and '80s in this glitzy, celebrity-filled coffee-table book that will fill any giftee with awe and nostalgia."—The New York Times, Holiday Gift Guide"... spectacular volume containing a treasure trove of the era’s glam."—Society Diaries"On the timeline of New York nightlife, the heyday of Studio 54 barely registers as a blip. Just three years separate the club’s celeb-mobbed 1977 opening and the raucous “going-away party” that proprietors Ian Schrager and the late Steve Rubell hosted before being carted off to jail for tax evasion. But in the four decades since that famous coke-snorting crescent moon first rose over the dance floor, no other nightclub has made quite as indelible an impression on the city’s social scene. From 10 p.m. until sunrise, A-list movie stars mingled with drag queens on roller skates, Park Avenue swans had (pre-AIDS-crisis) bathroom sex with downtown artists, and some of the 20th-century’s greatest literary lights watched it all from the infamous banquettes. Now, thanks to a new book, those who never made it past the velvet ropes—or are too young to have even tried—have a window into that wild-and-crazy magic. Studio 54 (Rizzoli), edited by Schrager, now impresario of a slew of hotels including the new Public Hotel, is equal parts oral history, personal scrapbook, and photo album, bringing together the reminiscences of regulars with star-studded snapshots and reams of gossip columns. Schrager, it seems, saved everything."—W Magazine.com"Ian Schrager looks back at the legendary club that he and Steve Rubell started in 1977, with vintage photos of the stars and personalities who walked through its doors."—WSJ. Magazine"Schrager is releasing Studio 54, featuring hundreds of photos from the club's heyday, many of them from his personal albums: Michael Jackson and David Bowie, presidential families and news anchors, the SNL crew, Diana Ross, Tennessee Williams, Halston, Roy Cohn, Richard Pryor, Vladimir Horowitz—a fairly broad representation of American achievement, and not a handler or cell-phone camera in sight. "—Esquire"To say that Studio 54 was the place to be, may in fact be the understatement of the last four decades. To celebrate the nightclub’s 40th anniversary this year, co-founder Ian Schrager looks back to the Studio’s history with a new coffee table book, out now, and an upcoming documentary to be released at the end of the year."—Refinery29.com"Legendary luxury hotelier Ian Schraeger, co-owner of Studio 54, has put together the ultimate illustrated memoir in the long-awaited magnum opus Studio 54 (Rizzoli New York). The book is the perfect mélange of photographs and press clips, memories of New York when nightlife was at its peak. But it’s more than a who’s who of the jet set—it is the ultimate guide to vintage style, from Valentino to Steven Tyler of Aerosmith."—Crave Online"In Ian Schrager’s new book, Studio 54, the club owner pulls back the velvet rope to capture the power, pleasure, and people at the greatest nightclub of all time."—Vanity Fair"The iconic disco club that defined an era comes alive again in this sizable memory-capsule by and on the legendary co-founder, Ian Schrager through spectacular photographs (some never before seen) featuring the likes of Mick Jagger, Elizabeth Taylor, Warren Beatty, Diana Ross and Andy Warhol. The More than just nostalgia, this is unfettered access past the velvet rope and into a unique world where celebrities and regulars partied together, epitomizing decadence and most importantly, having fun."—IndulgeMagazine.com Ian Schrager is an entrepreneur, hotelier, and real estate developer associated with the creation of boutique hotels. He gained fame as co-owner and cofounder, with Steve Rubell, of nightclub Studio 54 in 1977 and then the Palladium in 1985. Bob Colacello, a special correspondent for Vanity Fair, was the editor of Interview magazine for 12 years and is the author of several books, including Holy Terror: Andy Warhol Close Up.

Excellent compilation of one of the most amazing social phenomena ... Excellent compilation of one of the most amazing social phenomena of the late 70s! I lived it, went to Studio almost weekly, and it was spot on.More a celebration than the definitive history of Studio 54 2017 marks the 40th anniversary of the opening of Studio 54, probably the greatest of discos. Ian Schrager, one of the three co-owners, has just put out this volume. I have followed the history of Studio 54 from a Vanity Fair piece by Andy Warhol associate Bob Colacello, a History Channel documentary, and other material about the 1970's so it was no surprise I'd want to read Schrager's book. While not a night life person, I do enjoy a tale of high decadence. The book is not a terrible one, but if you are expecting an in-depth look at Studio 54's rise and fall as told by one of its leading members, you will be disappointed. The book is more a celebratory remembrance, recalling the good times and glossing over some of the uglier incidents. Schager kept scrapbooks and reproduces pages of news bits about the glory days of Studio 54. There are great photos of the famous and the lesser known but spectacular denizens. If you want to experience nostalgia or a wish you could have been there, this book will succeed. I suppose I should caution potential buyers by noting that they will be paying a lot for what amounts to the deluxe edition of Ian Schrager's scrapbook. Still, at least Schrager was part of something that was very fascinating, even four decades later. 10/20/17 CORRECTION: I wrote of a "History Channel documentary". I just came across my old videotape of the show and found that in fact, it was an episode of the "E! True Hollywood Story".Dionysus gives us a peek behind the velvet ropes of Studio 54 Sooooo good, you have to have it! It seems like everything that could ever be said about Studio 54 has already been said again and again, which begs the question: does the world (and your bookshelf) really need another book about the legendary disco? The answer is 100% YES, you need THIS Studio 54 book! First of all, the book is beautiful, oversized in black satin with the silver and gold Studio 54 logo on the cover, with the title and author blind embossed on the spine (pairs perfectly with the Andy Warhol: Polaroids XL book) and is the ideal design for the content. Secondly, the inside does not disappoint. Tons of photos of the glamorous patrons, as expected, but also behind the scenes photos of club itself in many stages of design, and facsimiles of Schrager's personal scrapbook of Studio 54. Lastly, Ian Schrager is the ultimate insider to retell the often told story of Studio 54. You get a peek behind the curtain to the see the celebrated early work of a man who wasn't just a one hit wonder with Studio 54, but a hospitality genius.
